What is marriage?
7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, 8 and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.” -Mark 10:7-9 BSB
Marriage is when one man and one woman come together before the Living God to commit themselves to each other. To be faithful, help each other, and be there until the end of their lives. And lastly, to build a family that will walk in the ways of the Lord so that their children, when grown, will have a family of their own and direct their offspring to commit their lives to the Lord (Malachi 2:15) for that is God’s desire.
What does marriage represent?
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free, and we were all given one Spirit to drink. -1 Corinthians 12:13 BSB
There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. -Galatians 3:28 BSB
6 And I heard a sound like the roar of a great multitude, like the rushing of many waters, and like a mighty rumbling of thunder, crying out: “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him the glory. For the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready. 8 She was given clothing of fine linen, bright and pure.” For the fine linen she wears is the righteous acts of the saints. -Revelation 19:6-8 BSB
The meaning of marriage will be fulfilled in Christ when we receive our new bodies in the resurrection. Just like Eve was taken from Adam’s rib, making her part of him physically to show that when two people get married, they become one. It is the same when we put our faith in Jesus Christ the Holy Spirit takes residence in us, making us become one in Christ Jesus.
