13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its savor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. -Matthew 5:13 BSB
Jesus compares all believers in Him as being salt. What does salt do? It preserves, seasons the meat to give it flavor, and heals.
Followers of the Lord Jesus Christ must always stay salty because that is the only way a believer will be effective for the kingdom of heaven. The salt represents the Holy Spirit and God’s Word, which makes the Christians equipped and prepared for the tasks the Lord sends them out to do.
The salt preserves- Through the gospel of Jesus Christ and the conviction of the Holy Spirit, it keeps the saints holy and ready to meet the Lord at His coming.
26 to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to Himself as a glorious church, without stain or wrinkle or any such blemish, but holy and blameless. -Ephesians 5:26-27 BSB [the word “her” refers to the church]
Salt seasons- God’s Word gives one meaning and purpose. It reveals God’s will for a believer’s life.
And do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind, for you to prove what is the good and well-pleasing and perfect will of God. -Romans 12:2 BSB
20 But this is not the way you came to know Christ. 21 Surely you heard of Him and were taught in Him—in keeping with the truth that is in Jesus— 22 to put off your former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be renewed in the spirit of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. -Ephesians 4:20-24 BSB
Salt heals- Salt placed on a wound helps to kill certain bacteria. God’s Word is no different, as it helps to kill off sin in people’s hearts so that spiritually, the saints may stay pure and right in God’s eyes.
19 Then the men of the city said to Elisha, “Please note, our lord, that the city’s location is good, as you can see. But the water is bad and the land is unfruitful.” 20 “Bring me a new bowl,” he replied, “and put some salt in it.” So they brought it to him, 21 and Elisha went out to the spring, cast the salt into it, and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘I have healed this water. No longer will it cause death or unfruitfulness.’ ” 22 And the waters there have been healthy to this day, according to the word spoken by Elisha. -2 Kings 2:19-22 BSB
The water and land were worthless to grow crops because the water was contaminated. The moment that the LORD told Elisha to throw in the salt, the water was purified, making the land produce fruits. The water and the land represent people, see Revelation 17:15 for “water,” and for “land,” see Matthew 13:20-23.
God’s Word works the same in a person. The moment the person hears the gospel of Jesus Christ and accepts it, that’s when the Lord gives the person saving faith (Romans 10:17), and salvation takes place, making the person holy and pure in God’s sight. Once the person becomes a believer in Christ and has the Holy Spirit living inside, God sends him or her out to produce fruits (good works) for the kingdom of heaven.
Helps The Saints Stay Pure
9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to Your word. 10 With all my heart I have sought You; do not let me stray from Your commandments. 11 I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You. -Psalm 119:9-11 BSB
