10 And the disciples came up and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” 11 And Jesus answered them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. Matthew 13:10-11, NASB
A “parable” is a story which uses illustrations that contains truth or reality, making it more vivid and easier to grasp. The thing is that the true meaning of a parable is in the mind of the one explaining it. Without the teacher, the one telling the parable, explaining the truth behind the story, no one will know its true meaning. Even though the listeners might understand the story, they won’t understand the significance of it.
Why did Jesus speak God’s Word or His Word in such a way to the people? Jesus fulfilled what the prophet Isaiah said about the people in Jesus’ time, that they were going to harden their hearts toward Him and not believe (Matthew 13:10-15). Jesus will only give those who respond to the conviction of the Holy Spirit the meaning of the Scriptures.
Just because a person reads the Bible doesn’t mean that they will understand it. This is very true to one who is an atheist, a Mormon, a Jehovah’s Witness and others alike. The reason God doesn’t open up their minds to understand is because they continue to reject the person of Jesus Christ as being God and also for those who reject the existence of God. When these types of people want to use the Bible to debate a spirit-filled believer, their interpretation sounds very foolish, awkward and nonsensical.
Let me give you an illustration how the Scripture can only be understood.
There were a few men on a ship who were looking for treasure. They came across a small island, instructed by another person that they will find treasure there. They start to dig by the tree they were told to dig at. To their amazement, they dug up a treasure chest. Mind you, this treasure chest is not like any other. It is heavy duty and unbreakable, all metal.
These men used every tool that they could find in the ship to get it open to no avail. They became agitated and started to lose their patience. They knew full well that inside contained riches that surpasses their understanding.
They came to realize that without the key, the newly found treasure chest becomes no value to them. Unless they can get inside that box, they will stay the same way they were before they found it, broke.
The key is the answer to their problem so that they can have access to the real treasure.
Friends, it is the same for us today. God’s Word is the treasure chest. Without the Holy Spirit, there is no way for one to unlock its meaning.
But a natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14
The Holy Spirit is the key to opening up the chest and finding out the true meaning of God’s Word and putting it into practice, finding pure peace in the midst of a storm. Knowing God’s Word, one finds purpose, hope, love and endurance. The Scriptures changes us to be more like Christ and keeps us from deception and from the devil’s traps.
In the treasure chest, you will find all types of precious stones which reflect different teachings on different topics. And you will get closer to Jesus Christ, having a strong relationship with Him.
Do you want to get close to Jesus Christ? Seek the key from Him so that you may be able to open up the true treasures found in its pages. It will make you rich toward Him, knowing things that you would have never known if you tried it on your own terms.
Give your life to Jesus Christ. Believe that He died on the cross because of your sins and took the punishment of death for you. The good news is that on the third day, Jesus rose from the grave to show that He has the keys of death and of heaven. He is the one with the power and authority to send you to either place. I know according to the Scriptures that Jesus wants you in heaven with Him. All you have to do is believe in Him and accept what He did for you. Understand that in your sinful state, you cannot make it to heaven unless Jesus forgives all of your sins.
