Verse By Verse Through Revelation (21:14-18)

the new city Jerusalem

14 The city wall had twelve foundations, and the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb were on the foundations.

Why were the apostles’ names on the foundations of the new city, Jerusalem? They were the ones that the Lord sent out into the whole world to preach Jesus Christ, death and resurrection, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but pass from death to life.

The Gospel [the good news] holds the rest of the Scriptures up because Jesus was the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies.

All of the Scripture hinges on the coming Messiah and His atoning sacrifice. Everything in the Word of God is about Jesus Christ.

Luke 24:26-27

26 Wasn’t it necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures.

15 The one who spoke with me had a golden measuring rod to measure the city, its gates, and its wall.

The angel who was showing John the visions was now going to unveil the size of this massive city.

16 The city is laid out in a square; its length and width are the same. He measured the city with the rod at 12,000 stadia. Its length, width, and height are equal.

There are 600 ft per 1 stadia so the length would be 1,379 miles in either direction [north or south], and the same miles across [west and east]. The wall’s hight will be 1,379 miles up as it includes hight being the same measurement.

To put it into perspective, from Miami Florida to New York City is about 1,278 miles. Using that length and putting it into a square and then straight up is how this massive city will be like.

17 Then he measured its wall, 144 cubits according to human measurement, which the angel used.

One cubit is 1.5 ft. so 144 cubits will be 216 ft. The walls are going to be 216 ft thick. Not only is the new city massive but it will be impenetrable. The huge city and its thickness reveal that it is impossible for sin and anything unclean to ever enter there. It also shows the strength of the city [security].

18 The building material of its wall was jasper, and the city was pure gold clear as glass.

Gold and precious stones in Scripture represents kingship, sovereignty, majesty, power, and wealth. It also represents righteousness [good works]

1 Corinthians 3:12-13

12 If anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one’s work will become obvious. For the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work.

the city was pure gold clear as glass. It will reflect the glory of God who will be our light source.

  1. The astronauts face plates were covered with clear gold. The nay sayers said it could not be done, therefore the city was not true. Our God never lies. :))

      1. I was using your measurements to get an idea of the size. Miami to New York didnt work for me, so I work on your measurements and for me it would be from Sydney to Cairns and my mind went. WOW!

  2. I still can’t wrap my mind around those dimensions. Obviously, God is a better construction engineer than is humanly possible. Can you imagine how many banks of elevators it would take to get to the Penthouse?

    1. “Can you imagine how many banks of elevators it would take to get to the Penthouse?”

The beauty is that we won’t need elevators. Most likely we will fly and go through walls anytime we want to. A couple of verses that reflect this:

      1. 1 Corinthians 15:42-44
42 So it is with the resurrection of the dead: Sown in corruption, raised in incorruption; 43 sown in dishonor, raised in glory; sown in weakness, raised in power; 44 sown a natural body, raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

We will have spiritual bodies that can be tangible and invisible.

      2. 1 John 3:2
2 Dear friends, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when he appears, we will be like him because we will see him as he is.

We will be like Him in reference to being holy [sinless] and with a resurrected body that is not made from this earth so imagine the limits he have here now in the physical world but in heaven or the new earth, that type of limit or restriction will be gone.
