Put on The Armor of God for Battle-Sword of the Spirit (Part 7)

Ephesians 6:17b (Part 7)

and the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s word.

The Roman sword was called gladius in Latin and one of the words derived from gladius is gladiator which means swordsman. It was a two-edged sword used for cutting and had a pointed tip for stabbing the enemy. The person’s name was often engraved on the sword. As Christians, we are armed with the sword and must be prepared as a gladiator for battle with no fear because Jesus is the One who fights our battles. The sword we use for battle is engraved with the Title (Word of God) which belongs to Jesus so when we fight the demonic forces, it is done through an offensive weapon, the sword, to cut and pierce the enemy with the Word of God which has the power and authority. It is called the sword of the Spirit which gives us the understanding of what is revealed in Holy Scripture. The more we read and study the word, the better we get in using the sword against the enemy. We are not just to block the enemy’s attack through the shield of faith but we must go into the offense to slash and destroy the enemy with the Word of God by memorizing Bible verses and using it when the enemy tries to deceive us or trap us so that we might sin against the Lord. Jesus Himself quoted Scripture to attack Satan’s temptations (Matthew 4:3-11). By using the sword, we are depending on Christ’s strength as found in Ephesians 6:10, “Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength.” It is important to meditate on God’s Word daily because the day of evil will come to try to destroy our faith in Jesus and a believer must be ready at all times.
